Showdown at the Walmart Restroom

There were several possibilities for this title.

Old woman who forgot her anxiety medication.

To pee or not to pee, that is the question.

Mind your own business.

Loony on the loose in the loo.

Anyhow, here's the lowdown. I went to Walmart today. Not by choice, because honestly, who shops there unless it's a necessity. Oh I suppose there's someone out there who actually enjoys the toothless cashiers, the grimy floors, and the disarray on every aisle and wants to read People magazine while waiting forty minutes in line to purchase $30 dollars worth of china-made crap, but that wasn't what I was in the mood for today.

I was looking for a new, smaller booster seat, so I was meeting my husband there. Hence, I had all four boys with me. My cart was loaded with Pete in the front, Jake and Nate in the basket, and Gabe walking alongside me. Consistent with the unwritten rule of Walmart shopping, Gabe had to go to the bathroom as soon as we walked in the doors. The thing you must know is that Gabe either has a micro-sized bladder or no "warning sensors." Basically, when he's got to go, he's got to GO NOW. So we all went.

As I walk into the bathroom, still pushing my cart full of boys (because the other rule is When One Needs to Go, They All Need to Go), an older woman walks up in front of me and says: "Your son is too old to use this bathroom."

She's standing next to Pete, so I think she's joking. "Oh, you mean the baby," I say back with a laugh.

And then she got NASTY. "No, your older son. He's much too old to use this bathroom," she snaps.

"No." I state, very firmly. "He's only 7, and he's going in here with me."

"You shouldn't bring him in here. He's TOO OLD" she starts yelling. Along with a bunch of other not nice things.

"No," I repeat, "I'm keeping him with me." Meanwhile I'm catching the leaping Nate who needs to go potty and still needs help getting his pants out of the way (and making sure he doesn't pee all over the seats, because I'm nice like that).

The woman keeps on with her rant, to the astonishment of two other ladies in the bathroom. She leaves with a flourish, shouting at me "You need to GROW UP!"

I look at the other ladies and say, "Well, I'm not sending him into the men's room by himself with all the perverts running around." And they kinda nodded, but I wished they'd have said something more supportive.

Because SERIOUSLY. Has anyone ever had a problem with a mom taking her children in to the women's restroom? That's what you do folks, even when all God's given you are boys.

Talk about making an unpleasant chore even worse. I didn't even feel better when I saw her later in the store and loudly said to my husband, "There's the lady who couldn't mind her own business in the bathroom."

To which she yelled, "Keep your kid out of the bathroom!"

So I yelled back, "Get a life!" Because I'm the bigger person.

So here I sit totally irritated by this cranky lady and thinking of all the other things I should have said to her. Maybe:

"I'm an attorney and I've read too many criminal cases to let my child go into a busy men's restroom unaccompanied."

"Clearly you've never had any of your own children, so don't tell me how to raise mine."

"That's it boys, mama's had it with the crazy lady. Line up and FIRE!"

"I'm sure he'd be more traumatized by seeing you in a stall than you'd be by seeing him."

I don't know. What would you have done?

P.S. The other thing that bugs. . . Gabe asked me, "Mom, what did I do wrong?" I assured him he did nothing wrong because he did what I told him to do. Ooooh, the nerve of some people.

The morning after: Check out this answer, and make sure you click on the links. Yeah, I'm keeping my boys with me for several more years.

What a ridiculous woman! It's not like they're open stalls in the ladies room anyway- what in the world is her deal?! Way to stick up for yourself.

Hey Im in that "Mother of all boys club" too. The nerve of that lady. Youre right its the finest of the people at good old wal-mart. I think your dead on that shes has never had boys of her own and most likely hasnt had kids. you did the right thing. Telling her straight up how you feel. Youre a better women then me cause I have a short tongue and lack of patience for people like that.

You simply crack me up i love reading your blogs. You go girl.

I'm constantly in that debate with Brandon (age 6 1/2). He thinks it's dumb for him to have to go in the women's restroom with me, but I won't let him go by himself to the men's. Especially at a crazy place like Walmart! I think you did the right thing.

As the mother of another 7-year-old boy, this has just recently become an issue. What is the right age to keep them out of the women's bathroom?

Way to Go Laurie, What a crazy Lady. I'.ve just started letting Andrew go in by himself, but thats only because Caleb goes with him, I believe in the power of two.

Isn't funny that most Wal-Mart employees have at least one tooth missing? It must be a requirement. I can see it now in the application process. "will you please smile. We need to verify here on your application that two teeth are really missing from your mouth." You're qualified.

You're too funny.

I cannot believe that!!! I am so angry for you!!!!

It isn't like he would have been peeking under the stall at her. All of the toilets are enclosed. I just don't even know what to say.

I always come up with comebacks after the fact. One time a lady in Wal-mart (hmmmm? it happened in Walmart, imagine that...)said something to me about my son trying to climb out of the cart and how I should have had him buckled in the front. I didn't have a comeback then but I thought about it for weeks afterward.

Ugh, what a fiasco. She was a loon.

Noah is 8 1/2 and he has been going in the men's room by himself for a little while now, although it still give me the heebie jeebies. I stand close by and make sure he's in and out of there fast!!

Okay, I haven't laughed out loud while reading a blog in a while. Thanks for that. And I say, "Right on, Laurie!" I think you done great. Crazy old woman! I love how you spat with her later in the store, too. That's awesome! Spencer wants to use the men's room now and I say, "NO WAY, JOSE!" Who knows what goes on in there...icky!
And p.s.: I am totally on that same page with you on the whole Walmart thing...another icky. I haven't shopped there for a good while, and am dang proud of it!

Well, if it helps you feel better...Brandon still comes into the women's restroom with me at certain places!! And he looks like he's 11! I know it seems weird and that he's way too old to be in there, but I just don't feel comfortable sending him into the men's room!!

When Kaycee was about 5 Jim had both kids at the grocery store and Kaycee had to GO!! Jim told her to go in the womens room and he would stand outside. (This was a one room bathroom) Kaycee locked the door behind her and guess what happened?? She could not get out. You should have seen Jim running around the store (while Matt stood outside the door)trying to get a key to unlock the door. We still tease Kaycee everytime we go into that grocery store and she is now 14!!

What a NASTY, is right! Both for Walmart and the lady. I think you did the right thing by sticking to your guns on the matter.

wow. as a mom of 4 boys, i'm always asking the same question when someone needs to go and i usually try to get them to go with me. jack's 8 now, so he doesn't like going with me anymore. i usually let him and sam (6) go together. after reading the link you posted, we won't be doing that anymore. and i don't really understand why it is such a big deal to some people, when the doors are closed. weird.

Oh, you did good, sister. That is ridiculous! What is it with mean and crabby old people? I swear, they are the worst. And you know they'll live forever - god doesn't want 'em either!
